Clinically certified to not die (aka Week 3)

14 May 2023

46km and a new rule for the blog: I’m only going to comment now when I hit every training run in a week. The intensive sessions this week were a Fartlek and a progressive intervals run. The progressive intervals hurt! Three sets of 5x Zone 3 for 30 seconds, Zone 4 for 20 seconds and Zone 5 for 10 seconds. Completely gassed at the end. Loved it.

For this weekend’s long run it was off to the Cook River. I feel like this is a bit of a hidden gem for running in Sydney. It’s a great to run up and down by itself (and it goes for AAAAGGGGEESSS), but also a great connector - I’ll use it to link up Bay Run (via the Greenway), get down to Brighton Le Sands and the excellent running by Botany Bay down there, head out West for a great suburban loop (more on this later!) and, if you don’t mind a little bit of improvising (and truck dodging) near the Airport, you can link up to the east. All of this will be covered in an upcoming spotlight on the river.

Another race-related milestone for this week. UTMB is the first race I’ve done that requires a medical certificate to participate in (and evacuation insurance! wow). So I chuffed off to the doctor to organise that. A bit of medical history and background, quick check of the heart rate, and one ECG later and I’m good to go. Glad to know the old ticker is ticking away.

See ya later, alligators
